A US Marine sniper team posed with a flag emblazoned with the symbol of the Nazi SS while on duty in Afghanistan, the Pentagon has admitted.

A photograph leaked onto the internet showed the heavily-armed troops crouching in front of the banner as it hung below the American flag.

The lightning symbol, once worn by the unit tasked with the extermination of Europe's Jews, sparked immediate outrage and put the Marines back on the defensive just weeks after an online video showed troops from a different unit urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters.

The photograph was reportedly taken in September 2010 by members of 1st Reconnaissance Battalion at a base in the Sangin district of Helmand province.

In a statement the Corps said: "Certainly, the use of the 'SS runes' is not acceptable and scout snipers have been addressed concerning this issue. 'SS runes' are prohibited from use as a symbol or any other use."

"Rest assured, the Marine Corps does not allow the use of 'SS runes'."

The SS or Schutzstaffel originated as a personal bodyguard to Adolf Hitler but rose to become one of the most feared organisations in the Third Reich. Under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler, the unit acted as the supreme enforcer of loyalty to the regime and manned the concentration camps.

This is an insult to all U.S. veterans of World War II. What kind of a culture exists in our military today where marines would think this kind of thing is acceptable?

The marine corps claimed the SS symbol was meant to be Scout Sniper.

But they did make it look an awful lot like the German SS symbol.

Perhaps it was just childish stupidity?

Sure... it doesn't mean "Schutzstaffel", it means "scout sniper." And those aren't crosshairs, they're surveyor's marks.

The sooner that pointless war in Afcrapistan is over, the better.

Ok. I'll play along.

So, where did you get that flag, boys?

Are there any non-whites in your squad??

Hmmmm.

Sure hope no one elludes to the United States Secret Service as the SS. There wil be outrage at such a reference.

Here is the sad thing. Our military is under constant attack without fact. It is not from enemies but from the American people. It is a shame we dishonor our vets in such a way.

The ruling in this matter was they were not going to use the symbol any more. However no punishenment was deemed needed as the marines were referencing sniper scouts. that is after the investigation this came out. But as usually someone sees something and jumps to conclusions and all at once it is fact without an investigation and they jump all over our service men.

Here is an error in the article.

The SS was actually originated much earlier then this. It was called the Saal-Schultz. Wish people would get history and facts straight before they print such hate in articles.

Funny you should say that about the Secret Service....

when requesting your "social" no one ever asks: what is your SS #?

Didn't even think about the SS number.

Maybe we need to take the letter "S" out of the alphabet. maybe we need to do away with any referense to lightning bolts. Oh my hate runs rampant.

The letter "S" has nothing to do with this, that's completely disingenuous and a straw man argument. No one has jumped to any conclusions, the Corps itself deemed it inappropriate:

In a statement the Corps said: "Certainly, the use of the 'SS runes' is not acceptable and scout snipers have been addressed concerning this issue. 'SS runes' are prohibited from use as a symbol or any other use."

Anyone that knows history knows the meaning of that symbol. I support the military, but these Marines are not above criticism.

It is a shame we dishonor our vets in such a way.

The actions of these Marines was inappropriate. My grandfather served in WWII and I find it offensive and disrespectful. They are the ones dishonoring our veterans, not the people who think there is no place for this kind of thing in our military.

    Oh my hate runs rampant.

Clearly. When it comes to apologists for those using neo-Nazi symbolism, the feeling is mutual.

My Dad served in WWII. I find in no way what these Marines did offensive or disrespectful.

I know exactly what the symbol was used for in the Germany. I know what the symbol was used for here. That is totally two different meanings. But there are those who have a chip on the shoulder and dare someone to knock it off. They wish to find fault in anything. Even if it means defaming our Marines.

The only reason the Marines called in appropiate is because of the coverage. Before then it awas appropriate. The clue is no punishment for the use of the symbol in the first place. But because some whiners cried it is now not appropiate.

By the way. My great great grandfather served under Hitler's regime. Those were very Dark times in History. But I do not see in anyway how these Marines were symbolizing that. Yes the symbol is similar. But that is as far as it goes. But yet everyone jumps and guts these Marines with no investigation or truth.

But because some whiners cried it is now not appropiate.

        About that "whiner" you mentioned?

The individual who reported the incident to the Marine Corps' inspector general was Iraq war veteran Waitman Beorn. "Beorn [is] a visiting history professor at Loyola University New Orleans, also a Fulbright and Guggenheim fellowship recipient who teaches at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. Dr. Beorn's research on Nazis and genocide is informed by his military background: He is a West Point graduate and former officer who served as a scout platoon leader in Iraq from 2003-04."

I was quite pleased with the response I got from the [colonel in charge of the First Marine Expeditionary Force's investigative office]. He seemed to be taking this very seriously and searching for those involved, as well as in educating the other scout snipers about the inappropriateness of this. I thought that using the incident as the basis for a class in the 1st Marine Division was an excellent response. I do want to highlight the response of the IG here. I was surprised by the speed with which they acted and the seriousness with which they appeared to take it.

The only part of the Marine Corps response that is a little troubling is the automatic assumption that these Marines had no idea what symbol they were appropriating. For example, from CNN: "They determined that the Marines in the photo were ignorant of the connection of this symbol to the Holocaust and monumental atrocities associated with Nazi Germany." I have a hard time believing that. One or two Marines, okay. But all of them, including their leadership?

I think our public needs to realize that this is not a case of the "liberal media" going after our brave men and women in uniform. Symbols are important. They send messages. These messages are important. It doesn't matter what the intent behind the use of the symbols was or what the snipers intended them to stand for. Some symbols simply have pretty solid meanings. For example, the swastika was not always a Nazi symbol, sadly. But no one would look at its use now and assume it was a reference to ancient India and that it was unfair to criticize whoever was using it. As a historian, of course, I would say this is another reason that knowing the historical provenance of images and ideas is important.

Those questioning should join the Marine Corps to better understand how these guys think. Only then will non Marines understand. To all prior vets from previous wars, yes, today's military is completely different from what you recall from your day. To say their message is one of white supremacy and hate is ignorant. Black bikers sport the Iron cross. I've even seen one with the every symbol in question here. Symbols from WWII are being reinvented for a new mentality by a new generation, as they have with each new generation since WWII.

Your rationalization is ludicrous. It's a neo-Nazi symbol no matter who's wearing it.

Camp Pendleton spokesman, Master Gunnery Sgt. Mark Oliva, said he did not know where the flag came from but it was likely the property of one of the Marines in the photograph.
